Trapped in the TikTok Loop: Breaking Free from Social Media Addiction

The Scroll That Never Ends

It starts with a quick check—just five minutes, you tell yourself. Before you know it, an hour has passed. Then another. By the time you look up, four hours have disappeared, swallowed by an endless stream of videos. TikTok’s algorithm knows exactly what keeps you hooked—entertaining clips, viral trends, and bite-sized dopamine hits. Yet, when the phone finally goes down, a heavy feeling sets in. The guilt of wasted time lingers, and the question arises: Where did my day go?

Many struggle with this cycle, trapped between the temporary thrill of TikTok and the sinking realisation that valuable hours are slipping away. They want to stop. They try deleting the app, setting screen time limits, or replacing it with more ‘productive’ content. But the pull remains strong, and soon, the scrolling resumes.

Time: A Precious Amanah

For a Muslim, the stakes are even higher. Time is a trust from Allah, an amanah, and every moment will be accounted for. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“The feet of the son of Adam shall not move on the Day of Judgment until he is asked about five things: his life and how he spent it, his youth and how he used it, his wealth and how he earned and spent it, and what he did with his knowledge.” (Tirmidhi)

When we reflect on this hadith, the reality hits hard. What will we say when asked how we spent our time? That we spent hours on social media, absorbing content that added little value to our lives? That we allowed TikTok to dictate our habits, moods, and even sleep patterns?

The Illusion of Productivity

Many convince themselves that TikTok isn’t all bad. After all, there are educational videos, Islamic reminders, and motivational talks. While this may be true, the question is: How much of your time is spent consuming beneficial content versus mindless entertainment?

TikTok’s structure—short, engaging, and fast-paced—makes deep thinking and reflection almost impossible. It rewires the brain for instant gratification, making it harder to focus on reading, studying, or even engaging in deep dhikr. Instead of being present in salah, the mind replays the last viral trend. Instead of having meaningful conversations with family, attention is lost in the next video on the For You Page.

Breaking Free: A Real Struggle

The desire to quit or at least limit TikTok use is common, but many don’t know where to start. Some attempt to go cold turkey, deleting the app entirely. Others set daily screen limits, only to bypass them when boredom strikes. The struggle is real.

What’s needed is not just willpower but a strategy. A way to rewire the brain, replace bad habits with productive ones, and take back control. But how?

A Path Forward

If you find yourself trapped in the TikTok cycle, you’re not alone. Many are searching for ways to escape the endless scroll and use their time wisely. The good news? There are practical solutions—strategies that go beyond vague advice like “just delete the app.”
